WWPD - News from the front Episode 39!

Hi Guys,

I love playing Flames of War with my mates amongst other historical games like Black Powder, Clash of Empires.......

I normally tune in to the WWPD (What Would Patton Do) podcast as it is light hearted, great fun and the guys just encourage the hobby they enjoy so much.

For the most part it is Flames of War based although other games get a mention from time to time.

Episode 39 is something a bit special as it includes an interview with John-Paul of Battlefront fame.

John-Paul answers some great questions from the guys and gives away a few spoilers.    For that alone it is well worth listening to.

World War Two in 28 mm?

Hi Guys,


While I still enjoy Flames of War the offerings at Warlord Games Bolt Action Range of figures and vehicles are too nice to not explore further.

I ordered British Infantry, German Infantry and british Commandos and a couple of Universal Carriers and Support weapons for each to see what the quality is like.

I am pleased to say AWESOME!

The plan is to expand the collection for Skirmish Gaming but in the short term here are a few preview pictures.  After all I must at least try to finish my SAGA project first!

Norman Knights for SAGA

Hi Guys,


Bet you didn't think I would follow with an update so quickly after the first!

I picked up a box of Conquest Games Norman Knights.  They are a nice plastic set which allow for easy conversions and are nicely detailed which I hope my photos display below.

You will notice that all have had the plastic spears removed and replaced with Brass Wire Spears.  I have  young kids and the chance of a few breakages are pretty good.

Parts are included for a command group including a Lord, Musician, and Banner/Pennant Bearer.

The casualty base is a very nice touch as well

Lastly in the box Renedra Bases are included (both single and double cavalry bases - 4 of each).  I decided to magnetise the bases for storage and transport using 3 mm diameter rare earth magnets.

I am very happy with the Conquest Games Normans and am looking to add more for my SAGA Army.  I may even extend the collection for playing larger Clash of Empires or Hail Caesar games.  Mmmmm Crusades .......

We are due to play SAGA again in around two weeks and I hope to have some paint on them by then!

SAGA - Dark Ages Skirmish Gaming

Hi Guys,

Update time again - Finally!!

Over the last month or so a good friend has introduced me to SAGA a Dark Ages Skirmish Game.

SAGA by Tomahawk Studio is well worth looking at providing an enjoyable game with not too many figures.  I will not ramble too much about the game but here are a few links for those interested:

Needless to say the game has grown in popularity that many other gaming stores sell it as well but at least the above links point you in the right direction.

Fans have even created 100 Years War and Ancient Greek Iliad variants which are available on the forums (from memory).

Best of all, any miniature range goes!

Small progress update.

Hi guys,

My 20 mm Elhiem Figures arrived and I started to clean them and base them.

I am happy to say very little cleanup is required if any and the detail is as good as shown on their webpage.

To be honest I am kicking myself for not trying these out sooner.



A few quick WIP photos to prove I am doing something even if there is not much to see yet.




After cleaning up the models I use superglue to attach the miniature to some flat washers.

I placed masking tape underneath the washers to prevent the washer and miniature from being superglued to the cutting board or table.

I do plan to glue magnetic sheeting to the underside of these washers to aid storage and transportation (more on that later). The washers were very cheap for around $4-5 for 100 washers.





Here is the total of tonights work. Not much but it has been a very long week and it was great to show some progress. I will keep chipping away at these.

The first models I have been basing are Iraqi models from Elhiem Figures Afghanistan and Iraq range. Before anyone goes all "Peace, Love and Mung Beans" on me (Damn Hippies!), I do not plan to use them as Iraqi soldiers.

I am toying with painting them up as Modern Day Soviet Cold War models, UN Peace Keepers from African Countries or as a Private Army for some evil Warlord/Druglord/Cultist.


As you can see I have narrowed the choices down 


Lastly I picked up some cork tiles to make buildings for Force on Force.





Ultimately I want to do this well to bring in more customers to our Local Gaming Store and have a laugh at the same time.  It's the weekend here in Australia so let's see if I can keep this going over the next few weeks.

Hi Guys,

As mentioned in previous posts, this diary will focus on Modern Day Skirmish and Battle games.

Rules:

Current ruleset  I have, is  Force on Force now produced by Osprey Publishing.


I was very impressed with the quality of the book and the rules inside.  I will try to write a basic review once I have a game or two under my belt.

Scale:

20 mm scale: - This seems to offer the most options for vehicle and miniatures at present.  It also strikes a nice balance between storage and table space with as little as 2' x 2' needed.


28mm: - being the miniature hussy that I am I am sure I will get some figures in this scale as well.


Aim:

To collect and paint enough Miniatures and Terrain to cover skirmish games with a view to running games at my Local Gaming Store Battle Station in Toowoomba and possibly run participation games at events like AUSCON.


Setting:

Will most likely be a fictional Country to prevent clashes with some of the conflicts ongoing today.  I am Ex-Army and do not celebrate or glorify war in any way shape or form.

I do enjoy fictional settings like Tom Clancy's book Red Storm Rising and movies like Battlefield LA however and to play something similar on the tabletop is my goal.

Hope you enjoy the journey as much as I do!

Now off to an appointment and I hope to have my first miniatures arrive in the mail today.
